Thirteen
Govindas and Rani
Mukherjee. The perfect recipe for hungama? Looks like it, going by
the preludes. Director Manoj Agrawal may have
burnt his fingers with his maiden venture in 1998,
Pardesi Babu, but this time he seems
to be taking no chances. While Pardesi Babu was predominantly a family
film with all ingredients that go with a Govinda starrer,
Hadh Kar Di Aapne is an out and out "fun
film", as its promotion would have us believe.
"Fun" brings us to the 13 Govindas. With HKDA, Bollywood's funny man
is venturing into a realm so far untraversed. While you've seen the immortal
Sanjeev Kumar essay nine roles with brilliance
in Naya Din Nayee Raat or superstars
Amitabh Bachchan and Shah
Rukh Khan play triple roles (in
Mahaan and
English Babu Desi Mem respectively),
Govinda has probably struck a lucky patch with the number 13.
How effective his portrayal of 13 roles in the film is, we'll find out on
April 14 (the film's scheduled release date). But one thing's for sure -
if anyone, it's Govinda who can generate masti as the troublesome
13. Watch out for the family lunch scene where our hero Govinda sits down
to dine with the family - his mom, dad, brother, sister, grandpa, grandma
et al. The catch, you discover, is it's Govinda playing all the members of
the family. By the way, if watching the scene reminds you of one
Eddie Murphy and a film called
The Nutty Professor, forgive and forget.
Moving on to
Rani Mukherjee. It's a Hindi film, after all,
and there's bound to be a love story within. Rani plays our hero's love interest
in life. There are the usual flavours of roothna-manaana in the air,
reason enough for the director to insert some zippy song-and-dance sequences
into his script. Rani does look great in the dance sequences and given the
sense of comedy she revealed in Kuch Kuch Hota
Hai and more recently in her minuscule role in
Badal, she should strike it out with
Govinda.
HKDA, in this context, is an important film because it is the first
in the line of several Govinda-Rani starrers lined up for release. It's fate
could have a direct impact on the market value of the two stars as a pair.
Anand Raaj Anand has come up with a good score
for the film. The hummable title song is already a hit, as also the foot-tapping
Kudi kunwari, which a goregous Rani brings alive on the screen. The
highlight Govinda song here is the dance number
Beqaraar.
Anand has come up with good music from time to time, but luck has not been
on his side. HKDA looks like the perfect vehicle to launch him bigtime
as a music director.
